The Problem
In the past 4 years in Nigeria and especially in the build-up to the elections between November 2018 and February 2019, Nigeria experienced firsthand the following:
- Abject unprofessionalism and/or incompetence of the news media in Nigeria is prevalent in all media (Mass media (television and newspaper) and the Social Media (SM) handles that are maintained by the frontline news media. The evidence of unprofessionalism is rife-television anchors that are partisan, ignorant of the content and context of national issues that they discuss, and unwilling to learn.
- The prevalence of FAKE NEWS and the confidence in which the Nigerian Journalists disseminate them.
- The unethical manner in which journalists hunt for and acquire news and the scorn in which they hold the country’s laws. A case in hand is the PT Journalist who somehow infiltrated the Police Force
- Headquarters intercepted a classified letter on the location of the DSS erstwhile chief Daura and publicized it. There is also the recklessness of publishing information on Nigerian soldiers’ location in the war against Boko Haram and insurgents.
- The poor grammar and sheer unintelligibility of the articles and news reports in the media.
